ORIGINAL FINNISH ARMORY TAG. Cal. 9mm Luger. S# 3774. Bbl. 4 3/4". With praise from Finnish volunteers that served in the Imperial German army in World War I, the Finnish army chose to purchase Lugers from DWM during the early 1920s. DWM, prohibited from mfg. the Finn's requested P.08 in 9x19mm, sold Finland approx. 8,000 Model 1920 Commercial Lugers chambered in 7.65x21mm. Many of these 1920 Commercial Lugers (designated M/23) were subsequently converted to 9x19mm via the addition of a Tikkakoski bbl. Further more, in 1921, the Finnish army acquired spare parts to repair their Lugers, mostly consisting of toggle assemblies that were mfg. by Mauser. This example, an M/08 Luger (Finnish designation for a 9x19mm Luger) was produced by DWM, originally as a Model 1920 Commercial Luger. The replacement Mauser bbl. extension is marked "1937" over the chamber, with a Finnish boxed "SA" proof marked on the left. Toggle is marked with the Mauser banner logo, with a German Crown/N commercial nitro proof marked on the left side of the frame and breechblock. Top of the bbl. exhibits the Tikka arsenal logo. Right side of the frame exhibits a TG Knox import mark. Metal components exhibit an arsenal reapplied blue finish overall, save for on the trigger, which is in-the-white. Frame is mounted with 2-piece Mauser checkered black synthetic grips. Lahti pattern dovetailed blade front sight, with arsenal modified fixed U-notch rear sight. Most parts are unnumbered, save for the frame (S# 3774), takedown lever & sideplate, (S# 71), as well as the rear toggle link (S# 06). MAGS: 1 8-rd. with black synthetic bottom, lightly etched "8997". UNATTACHED ACCESSORIES: original post-war Finnish Armory #1 arsenal tag, listing this pistol by S#. CONDITION: metal components retain the majority of their Finnish arsenal blue finish, exhibiting some areas of wear and thinning, with scattered superficial handling marks present overall. Frame exhibits some areas of light to mild surface oxidation and pitting. Very bright bore, exhibiting light pitting, while retaining discernible rifling throughout. Grips show some smoothing, as well as scattered marks from handling and storage, but otherwise remain sturdy and serviceable. An extremely intriguing Finnish Luger variation, complete with its original arsenal tag. PROVENANCE: The Estate Collection of Charles Wagner. (25-373/MLW). CURIO. $1,000-1,500.
