WITH SCARCE FINNISH HOLSTER. Cal. 9mm Luger. S# 7175n. Bbl. 4 11/16". Unsatisfied with their domestically designed Ahlberg pistol, the Finnish Ministry of Defense went to DWM, requesting the P.08 Luger pistol. Due to the Treaty of Versailles, DWM was unable to produce any small arms in the 9x19mm Parabellum cartridge, and was only able to supply Finland with the Model 1920 Commercial Luger chambered in 7.65x21mm Parabellum. The Finnish Ministry of Defense ultimately accepted these Lugers, designating them as the "M/23", with a small number later being re-barreled to the 9x19mm Parabellum cartridge. This example, is marked with a German Crown/N commercial nitro proof (also present on the left side of the breechblock), followed by a boxed Finnish "SA" military proof on the left side of the bbl. extension. Toggle is marked with the "DWM" intertwined monogram. Top of the Finnish replacement bbl. is marked with the Tikka arsenal insignia. Metal components exhibit what appears to be a period (likely Finnish arsenal) reapplied blue finish overall. Takedown lever, trigger, and safety lever have been reheated at one time. Frame is mounted with 2-piece checkered wood grips. Lahti L-35 style blade front sight, with the rear sight having been modified into a square notch configuration. Takedown lever exhibits grind marks on its exterior face. All serialized parts are matching and include the frame, takedown lever, sideplate, and trigger. MAGS: 1 unmarked 8-rd. with wood bottom. UNATTACHED ACCESSORIES: scarce Finnish brown leather holster, with brass fittings. Closure flap is stamped with a boxed Finnish "SA" proof. Holster contains a Finnish boxed "SA" marked loading tool and brass cleaning rod. CONDITION: metal components retain the majority of their likely Finnish arsenal reapplied blue finish, exhibiting some areas of wear and thinning that show through to gray and brown patinas, with areas of pitting present beneath the blue, primarily under the grip panels. Strawed parts retain fair to good amounts of their reheated finish, exhibiting some areas of pitting beneath the straw. Brilliant mirror bore, exhibiting what appears to be some very light pitting and/or hardened grease, while retaining strong rifling throughout. Grips are very good, showing mild smoothing and some scattered nicks and marks to the diamonds. Holster remains malleable, exhibiting some wear, scattered marks from handling and storage, as well as some light age related cracking and crazing overall. Brass fittings and cleaning rod exhibit a mellow patina. A nice example of a rare Finnish M/23 Luger with an original holster. (24-6784/MLW). CURIO. $1,200-1,800.
