In Boston agent jewelry box, 2.5" overall gold T-pin attached red, white, and blue ribbon attached to 1.5" gold star with triangle and acorn representing the corps badges of the Army of the Cumberland. The Army of the Cumberland was prominent in the Atlanta Campaign and crushed Hood at Battle of Nashville and followed Sherman in March to the Sea. This badge is finely inscribed "Major Thos. Challenor USA". Thomas Challenor (1812-1894) was sheriff of St. Clair County, IL at beginning of war, he became active in recruiting local troops. His company he raised in the 22nd IL Infantry marched to Bird’s Point, Missouri on the Mississippi where some of the first action in the western theater of war began. Captain Challenor’s company took part in the action at Battle of Belmont where Challenor was shot in the hip, and beat with a gun butt after his capture. He was later exchanged and after recovering from wounds was promoted major and served on staff of General Alvan Gillem. These are among the scarcest Civil War Army Society badges. UNATTACHED ACCESSORIES: history of the army of the Cumberland, history of medal’s recipient, original dealer description. CONDITION: fine overall, ribbon has some fraying but sound. (02-24319/JS).
