THE DESERT". Very early 20th century portrait photograph of a young Navajo chief by Edward S. Curtis of Seattle, WA. The chief is depicted wearing a headdress and wrapped in a Navajo blanket. Signed lower right "Curtis" and copyright symbol at lower left. Housed in a molded textured gold frame. An original Curtis label is affixed to the back of the frame identifying the sitter with text history. First printed in 1904 "The Navajo Portfolio of North American Indian (Curtis 1907). The gold tine is a glass plate positive photograph with remarkable luminous quality obtained by printing a reversed image on glass and then backing it with a mixture of powered gold pigment and banana oil. NOTE: This image was reproduced in 2008 by Cardoza, these reproductions are selling for $3,500-$6,500 depending on size, Our copy here is however an original, not a copy. SIZE: 10 1/4" x 8 1/2" sight. Overall 13 1/2" x 11 1/2". Note: This size is a rarer size than the 11" x 14" size. CONDITION: very fine, original condition. (05-76/TG). $6,000-9,000.
