SILENCER. Cal. 22. S# IRS 2907. Maxim Model 1923 .22 caliber silencer mfg. by the Maxim Silencer Co. Designed by Hiram Percy Maxim (son of famed machined gun designer Hiram Maxim) in the early 1900s, the Maxim 1909s design functioned differently than contemporary silencer designs, utilizing a more expensive and time utilized curved vanes within the silencer to spin cooling gas and reduce pressue, with the Model 1921 and 1923 silencers utilizing a system of 18 removable individual "silencing chambers". The rear of the tube is marked "MAXIM SILENCER CAL. MODEL 1923/ PATENTS PENDING/ MAXIM SILENCER CO.HARTFORD CT. U.S.A.", with its amnesty registered S# "IRS2907" marked towards the forward edge. Silencer measures 6 13/16" in length, featuring a blued steel construction. CONDITION: exterior retains large amounts to the majority of its original factory blue finish, exhibiting areas of light wear and thinning fading to gray patina, scattered spots of light surface oxidation, scattered spots and patches of light to mild pitting, as well as scattered superficial handling marks overall. Baffles have been struck, but otherwise appear to remain largely intact. With the implementation of the 1934 National Firearms Act, many Maxim silencers were not registered, with most being destroyed throughout the years, largely owing to their scarcity today.
