Cal. 7.65mm. S# 3061. Bbl. 3 3/8". Designed by Albert Kadits, the P.B. Spezial, the P.B. (Polizei-und Behordenpistole or "Police and authorities pistol) Spezial pistol was originally mfg. by August Menz. In 1938, a lawsuit from Walther forced Menz to drop "P.B." from the title, and the company is believed to have gone bankrupt, subsequently selling to Theodore Bergmann Erben G.m.b.H, with conflicting information setting the total production of the Spezial pistol to be between approx. 1,000-5,000 between both Menz and Bergmann. This example, mfg. by Menz, is marked "WAFFENFABRIK AUG. MENZ SUHL/ MODELL P.B. SPEZIAL" on the left side of the slide. Right side of the frame, slide, and bbl. exhibit a Crown/N commercial nitro proof. Metal components exhibit what appears to be an older reapplied blue finish overall, save for on the bbl., which is polished in-the-white. Frame is mounted with 2-piece checkered black synthetic grips, marked "Special" within a panel at the top of each grip. Grips are possibly contemporary production. Slide features a grooved matte rib, with an integral blade front sight and U-notch rear sight. Distinctive safety switch on slide, and takedown lever on frame. Matching numbers are present on frame and slide and hammer strut, with other usually serialized parts being unnumbered. MAGS: 1 8-rd. CONDITION: metal components retain the majority of their blue finish, showing areas of mild edge wear and scattered spots of light to mild pitting that are fading to a gray patina. Near mirror bore, retaining well defined rifling throughout. Action functions appropriately when cycled by hand. Grips show unusual surface texturing, with some light wear to the checkering and a raised section of extra material on the top right corner of the right panel. (25-3505/MLW). CURIO. $2,000-3,000.
