"J WORKMAN". Cal. 36 rifled. NSN. 52" Overall. Bbl. 37" oct. John Workman was working in Hamburg, PA in 1838. This rifle is what was obviously made in the upper Susquehanna school while he was in lower Mahoney township, Northumberland County, PA dating the gun to earlier than 1838. 4 Piece engraved brass patchbox w/ 2 piercings, incise carved to the rear & forward of cheekpiece as well as around the bbl. tang. Rifle has 26 silver inlays & a 6" engraved silver saddle plate. 6 1/2" Brass comb inlay. Golcher Warranted percussion lock w/ dbl. set triggers. CONDITION: there is some incise carving at rear entrance ferrule on right hand side which is absent on the left hand side where there is an old period wood repair. Approx. 1/4" of wood is missing along the bbl. on both sides from lock to nose cap. Nose cap appears to be replacement. PROVENANCE: Collection of Dr. John Persing. (01-19589/RG).
