EMIGRANTS". Octavo, 9 engraved plates by Percy Cruikshank, London 1849. "Hints to Emigrants or Incidents in the Emigration of John Smith of Smith-Town". This popular book has been reprinted several times and was in print recently with added text. Cruikshank was 19th century comic illustrator. In an unknown wilderness (maybe the Rockies), John Smith begins his journey with great hardship, vicious Indians, animals, blizzards, as seen in the first eight illustrated plates, but by the 9th he is sitting on his porch viewing a town full of businesses with his name on all of them. All ended well for Mr. Smith. CONDITION: good overall, shaken, 2 old bookshop labels, chipped wraps, soiled. PROVENANCE: Swann lot 161, March 2012, Martin Lane Historic & Western Americana Lifetime Collection. (02-21934/JS). $200-400.
