KNIFE. This very scarce and desirable knife was made during World War II by the the Northampton Cutlery Co. for "BO" Randall after being supplied with a prototype by Mr. Randall. Approximately 1200 of these knives were made. They are stamped "Springfield" instead of Northampton as that was the location of the home of the owner of the company. These knives produced in 1943 and 1944 saw hard use in WW2 and few have survived the ravages of time and combat. The knife is 12 1/2" overall with a 7 7/8" blade having a sharpened false edge. Blade marked on left side with "swords" and "RANDALL MADE SPFLD.MASS.". The mark has a double stamped appearance with the top line indistinct. Brass double hilt. Stacked leather washer handle with colored spacers. The buttcap is aluminum with a hex head retainer drilled for a lanyard. The sheath is a dark brown leather with riveted and stitched construction and equipped with a pocket for a sharpening stone, which is no longer present. Snaps have stippled appearance. CONDITION: blade is worn and has been sharpened and shows scattered grinding marks throughout. Hilt has traces of original plating turning patina with moderate wear. Leather grip shows wear, staining and handling marks. Buttcap has wear and small dents. Sheath has heavy wear flexing scuffing . Male side of retaining strap is not present. Hole on back side from blade tip. PROVENANCE: From the life long collection of Glen E. Mattox. (02-18612/RW). $1,000-1,500.
