13" Overall, 8.5" up swept clip point blade marked “SCHMID / PROVIDENCE”, 2" sharpened clip, 5" beveled top, wide 2.5" lozenge shaped German silver crossguard w/ reeded edges. Schmid bowie knives are quite rare w/ few examples known. The handful of bowies known come in several different sizes & shapes, but all like this have checkered surgical tool like ebony grips w/ German silver mounted Sheffield style sheaths such as this. Schmid, likely of German ancestry & the paper used to form scabbard has exposed text in German under gilt bordered dark veneer. An example is shown in Harold Petersons 1958 text, misidentified, but later correctly identified in Norm Flayderman’s “The Bowie Knife”, pg. 328. CONDITION: very good overall, blade is gray w/ sharpening, handle sound, scabbard poor missing drag & most all veneer on reverse but throat still retains sm. frog button. (02-15597/JS). $1,200-1,500.
