DOUBLE ACTION PERCUSSION POCKET REVOLVER. Cal. 31. S# 16. Bbl. 2 15/16". 1 of approx. 625 First Model Pocket revolvers mfg. by Josiah Ells from 1857-1859 (total production across all variations: 1,375). Left side of the hammer is marked "ELLS/ PATENT", followed by a crescent moon, with "AUG.1/ APRIL.28." and "1854/ 1857." marked on the right. Sides of frame feature engraved foliate motifs, with small motifs engraved along the circumference of the cyl. Frame is mounted with 2-piece plain wood grips. Brass bead / cone style front sight. All serialized parts are matching and include the frame (right side beneath grip panel, followed by a crescent moon stamp), cyl. (rear face), bbl., as well as the left grip panel. Right grip panel appears to be unmarked. CONDITION: metal components have faded to a gray patina, exhibiting scattered spots of light to mild pitting, as well spots of age related discoloration. Bore exhibits consistent mild pitting and scattered patches of moderate pitting, while retaining fair rifling throughout. Proper manual mechanics. Grips show scattered superficial marks and small impressions from handling and storage, with some light wear to their varnish. (01-28056/MLW). ANTIQUE. $1,200-1,500.
