MODEL 1902 "PAPA" NAMBU SEMI-AUTOMATIC PISTOL. Cal. 8mm Nambu. S# 1809. Bbl. 4 3/4". Model 1902 Modified "Papa" Nambu semi-automatic pistol mfg. by TGE (Tokyo Gas & Electric) and the Tokyo Artillery Arsenal. After the adoption of the Type 14 Nambu in 1925, the Tokyo Artillery Arsenal transferred all existing parts, tooling, and dies to TGE, as TGE became responsible for the Imperial Japanese army's "Papa" Nambu production. Subsequent to the Type 14 Nambu's adoption, demand for the "Papa" decreased significantly, with approx. 500 pistols assembled by TGE from Tokyo Arsenal parts before production was terminated. This example is marked with Kanji characters denoting "Army Type" on the left side of the frame, with the encircled "TGE" logo marked over the top of the chamber. Right side of the frame is marked with the Tokyo Artillery Arsenal insignia, followed by Kanji characters denoting "Nambu Type" and the S#. Metal components exhibit a blue finish overall, with the bolt and firing pin being polished in-the-white. Some small parts exhibit a reheated straw finish. Frame is mounted with 2-piece checkered wood grips, retained by reproduction screws. Left grip exhibits wider checkering, with the right exhibiting coarser checkering. Dovetailed blade front sight with tangent V-notch rear sight, graduated 1-5. Frame features a hinged lanyard ring, with the stock slot having been appropriately filled in. All serialized parts are matching and include the frame, trigger guard, recoil spring guide rod, bbl./bbl. extension, ejector, locking block, bolt, as well as the cocking knob. Mag. latch button body, firing pin, striker pin guide, and grips are unnumbered. MAGS: 1 non-matching (S# "3937") 8-rd. CONDITION: metal components retain large amounts of their blue finish, showing some areas of wear and thinning, and exhibiting varying degrees of pitting overall. Grip straps and trigger guard retain a mostly dark gray patina with moderate pitting. Strawed parts are excellent as reheated, with the trigger retaining good amounts of original straw, exhibiting areas of fading to a dark gray patina and scattered spots of age related discoloration. Bore exhibits consistent mild to moderate pitting, while retaining fair rifling throughout. Proper manual mechanics. Grips exhibit some smoothing, as well as scattered marks and impressions from handling and storage, with both panels exhibiting varying degrees of chipping along the edges and repaired breaks/cracks. Mag. body exhibits a mellow gray patina. (25-3511/MLW). CURIO. $1,200-1,800.
