TARGET PISTOL. Cal. 56 bore (~.44 cal). NSN. Thomas Bailey was an English gun maker who moved to New Orleans in the 1840s & set up shop on Chartres Street. When the Civil War began, he left, but his son Thomas & John would make New Orleans their permanent home & continued in the gun making business into the 1870s. 16” Overall. Brass weighted bulbous butt, triggerguard w/ finger spur, single set trigger, patent breech. Lock marked “T. BAILEY” & “PATENT”. 10” Oct. bbl. engraved “T. BAILEY NEW ORLEANS”. Brass blade inset front sight, raised notch rear sight. CONDITION: very good overall. Bbl. has dark gray/ plum patina. Lock & hammer silver/gray. Rear sight is an old replacement w/ filing & forging flaws. Stock is sound, well fit. Mechanically crisp w/ well defined rifled bore. PROVENANCE: Collection of John Montague. (01-20727/JS).
