CAROLINA SURCHARGE ON THE BARREL. Cal. 54. NSN. Bbl. measures 9". Barrel is proofed on the left side, "P" over "US" and is clearly stamped on the top, "S. CAROLINA". The lockplate is lightly marked, "S. NORTH" over an American eagle flanked by "U" and "S" with "MIDLTN CONN" below. Iron trigger guard, buttcap, backstrap, side plate and barrel band. The double strapped barrel band does feature Wickham's Improvement. No ramrod. This pistol is a fine old survivor of many conflicts and likely even saw service during the Civil War. The M1816 with South Carolina proofs is increasingly difficult to find. CONDITION: all iron parts have a rich, dark original patina and remain in as found condition. The lock is original flint and holds both full and half cock. The stock has some charring on the left and right side of the barrel opposite the pan. There are minor losses to the right side at the rear of the barrel. There is a crack from the front of the side plate extending back 2". There is another crack at the butt that extends around the grip. Good bore. (01-21677/BF). ANTIQUE. $3,500-4,500.
