EXPERIMENTAL HOLSTER & 1909 BENICIA ARSENAL HOLSTER. 1) Rock Island Experimental Holster for the Model 1909 Revolver w/ a belt swivel fabricated to be easily detached. This holster is referenced on pages 221 through 224 of the book, U.S. MILITARY HOLSTERS AND RELATED ACCOUTREMENTS by Edward Scott Meadows. The holster body is mfg. to be worn on the right side w/ butt to the rear. There is a brass fitting on the rear edge of the body likely to accommodate a leg tie down. The front flap of this holster has the "US" in the oval to show when flap is held open plus is secured in both the open and closed positions by brass finials. The rear flap which is also marked "US" has a circular plate secured by 4 brass rivets on which is mounted a heart shaped fitting which would correspond to a similar fitting on the belt of the wearer. This belt fitting is not present. the outer flap is stamped w/ "28" below the reversed "US". CONDITION: holster is well worn w/ extensive flexing, cracking and staining. Stitching remains generally tight. 2) Model 1909 Russet Holster for the Model 1909 Revolver. This holster is "US" marked on the body. The flap is marked "U.S. ARENSAL BENICIA". Flap is secured by brass finial. Plain wide belt loop equipped w/ rawhide belt position thong. Tip is equipped with brass ring for tie down thong. Holster designed to be worn butt forward if on the right side. CONDITION: holster has moderate wear, flexing & staining throughout. Stitching is tight & markings are legible.
