AMES.
Overall length 37 1/2". Blade length 30 1/8”. This is an exceptionally rare and seldom encountered officer’s sword by Ames. It was regulation for medical staff for a scant 8 years from 1832 to 1840. This sword would have been regulation during the Black Hawk War, Second Seminole War, and of course during the Texas Revolution. Blade is elliptical in cross section and etched over 2/3 of its length with various patriotic & foliate motifs, including American eagles with liberty banners and a central spray of arms with “US” in shield. Blade is etched near the hilt “N.P. Ames Cutler Springfield”. Heavily gilded brass hilt with a single kidney-shaped guard. Orb decorated guard, pommel, grip and knuckle bow. Gilded brass scabbard with foliate engraving. CONDITION: blade has a pleasing light gray patina. Hilt retains nearly all of its original gilded finish. Scabbard has a few tiny dents and retains much of its original gilded finish. (02-19453/BF). $2,500-3,500.
