COMPANY. This very scarce helmet was one of the experimental types submitted to the government when the US entered WWI. This type is known as an experimental helmet #8, and approx. 1,300 examples were produced by the Ford Motor Company in October of 1918. This helmet has a heavily sanded brown/green painted finish on the outside with a smooth painted finish of the same color on the inside. There is a pivoting visor on the front of the helmet featuring two eye slits that provide increased protection from small arms’ fire and shrapnel from the front. Helmet features a 3-pad leather liner with each pad having two tongues. The chinstrap is finely woven heavy web cotton. UNATTACHED ACCESSORIES: this helmet comes with a plexiglass display stand. CONDITION: helmet finish shows wear but is substantially intact. The liner shows moderate to heavy wear with the tongues on one pad missing. Chinstrap is complete. (02-23075/BF). $3,000-4,000.
