SWORD. Standard configuration of 1832 Ames artillery short sword, 25” overall, 18.75” triple fullered blade stamped in large letters: on either side of cross guard “USS PAWNEE” & “MORTAR CREW”. Few short swords or cutlasses are known with similar inscriptions. USS Pawnee was 220’ sloop of war with 180 man crew, that saw service entire war on Southeast coast, Virginia & Carolinas seeing constant action. This is interesting relic from ship that produced 2 Medal of Honor recipients. CONDITION: good overall, blade is cleaned, polished and pitted with makers marking obliterated, brass scabbard mounts and hilt cleaned & polished & toned to light patina. Scabbard is sound. Inscription crist and presents well. (02-19070/JS). $1,500-2,000.
