CHUC-ZUTZU. Cal. 1.09". NSN. These very large caliber guns are essentially hand cannons and were probably best used when rested on some support. This well used gun has very heavy 27 1/2" ovate barrel measuring around 2 1/4" at breech end. Barrel tapers toward muzzle and ends with a small flare. Traditional sights are fitted. Breech section is inlaid with three Japanese characters. Eight more are stamped on left side at a later date. Breech is also fitted with brass flash guard and hinged pan cover. Boss is stamped with some Japanese letters. Lock is brass and has iron serpentine inlaid with brass and silver flowers. Similar inlay is on iron trigger guard. Stock is of evergreen oak and is traditionally shaped; front portion with flats on bottom. CONDITION: good. Barrel showing considerable cleaning to bright highlights over brown pitted patina. Brass cleaned and lacquered is toning. Stock with old oil refinish shows considerable wear. Lock is good. Bore is dark with considerable pits. PROVENANCE: From the Lifelong Collection of Glen E. Mattox. (01-22457/MGM). ANTIQUE. $4,000-6,000.
