18” x 22” silk double applique embroidered with queen’s crown, “XIX”, and unit’s crest, contractor’s stamp in sleeve: “HOBSON & SONS LONDON LTD” with Lexington address (1880-1890s). The 19th Lancers were a regiment raised in India in 1858 after the Great Mutiny. They would serve in Asia fighting in Afghanistan, India and on the Asian northwest frontier. Lancer regiments were outdated by the turn of the century and the 19th Lancers would be converted to infantry by World War One. The crown above the center represents the British monarchy. The Union flag is the amalgamation of the symbols of England (the red Cross of St. George), Scotland (the white St. Andrew’s Cross) and Ireland (the red Cross of St. Patrick within the white cross). This design began in 1801 with the addition of the latter cross. CONDITION: good overall, sleeve has unsewn edge which shows the contractor’s stamp, several cracks and small holes, good color and embroidered designs. (02-19982-20/JS). $300-600.
