A superb and rare 2 sided flag measuring approximately 52" x 40", including the 2 1/4" gold fringe that surrounds 3 sides, for the 5th Special Forces Group. The flag has a green body with a beautifully embroidered American Eagle displaying a ribbon in its beak the reads "DE OPPRESS LIBER" and a ribbon below that reads "FIRST SPECIAL FORCES". The gorgeous polychromatic eagle has a large white shield on its chest bearing a WWII era OSS stiletto. Above the eagle, are crossed arrows over a black and white rope. The robust American Eagle grasps 13 arrows in one talon and a large gracefully articulated olive branch in the other. The upper left corner has a circle enclosing a "5" denoting the 5th SFG. This flag traveled to Vietnam with the 5th SFG and remained in country until 1971. When the unit returned to Fort Bragg, a grand ceremony was held and the flag was presented to then famous comic actress and singer Martha Raye ( Margy Reed ) for her service in support of the 5th SFG troops in Vietnam. The treasured flag remained with her, in her Bel Air home, until after her death and in 1971 was sold by her husband, Mark Harris. The 5th SFG was one of the hardest fought units in Vietnam. In 1967 alone 55 men of the 5th SFG were killed along with 1,654 Vietnamese allies. 5th SFG credited Viet Cong casualties were over 7000. CONDITION: flag shows light wear with a few very minor stains. The border is a bit faded but colors in the body are crisp and vibrant. (02-24348/BF). $20,000-25,000.
