STAINLESS STEEL BARREL. Cal. 25-20 WCF. S# 8977. Bbl. 22" tapered rnd. of stainless steel with Japan black finish. Stainless steel bbls. were offered on all models at additional cost for a short period of time beginning in 1927. Since Winchester did not have the technology to blue stainless steel "Japan Black", lacquer finish was used. This finish did not hold up well and resulted in the discontinuation of the scarce stainless steel bbl. option. Ramp mounted Lyman bead front sight, filler in dovetail, with No. 38 "Climbin Lyman" receiver sight. Button mag. Blue finish. Walnut forearm and straight grip stock with grooved flat steel buttplate. Mfg. in 1927. CONDITION: bbl. retains an impressive 90%+ original "Japan Black" finish showing slight muzzle wear and scattered handling marks. Very good original wood finish showing light scratches and marks. Bright near excellent bore. It is rare to find Winchesters with bbls. that retain even a substantial part of their "Japan Black" finish, with even fewer found in such high overall condition. (25-1755/DS). CURIO. $3,000-4,500.
