ACTION MILITARY RIFLE. Cal. 8mm Mauser. S# 6726m Numbers match on receiver, bbl., bolt assembly, bolt stop, trigger guard assembly, bbl. bands & butt stock. Bbl. 29 1/4". Tangent rear sight is marked “s.S.” delineating use w/ the heavy S boat tailed bullet. Inverted V front sight. Receiver ring is marked on top w/ Imperial crown “AMBERG” & “1917”, “1920” Weimar reissue date. Marked on right side w/ faint Imperial proofs. Eagle acceptance mark on left side has been rendered illegible. Left receiver rail marked “Gew.98.”. These rifles were upgraded from the Gew 98. by the replacement of the original Lange rear sight w/ a tangent type. The lower band was made wider & more durable. The stocks were given grasping grooves, but the rifles still retained the straight bolt handle. The 1920 date on the receiver was added to differentiate these arms from arms those surrendered during the disarmament of the civilian population. Replacement bbl. has been renumbered to match receiver w/ its original S# lined out. The “S” marking is offset to the right behind the rear sight base. Straight bolt handle. Bayonet bar is present. Parade hook is present on upper band. Replacement cleaning rod does not engage threads in forearm. Wide lower band correct for these rifles has bottom swivel. Rear QD swivel is present. Swivel is marked “10.”, “crown antler” & “81.”. Matching walnut stock set marked only w/ S#. Stock has grasping grooves, steel takedown hole & flat steel buttplate. UNATTACHED ACCESSORIES: 12 3/8" fullered blade Model 1916 Ersatz bayonet w/ cast steel handle & open muzzle loop. Steel scabbard w/ ball finial. Black leather frog w/ copper rivet reinforcement. Blade has been cleaned over oxidation & moderate pitting. Handle is overall patina w/ rough wartime finish & oxidation & moderate pitting. Scabbard is gray & patina w/ small dents. Frog has heavy wear, cracking & scuffing. CONDITION: stock set has well worn original finish w/ scratches & handling marks commensurate w/ service in 2 World Wars. Metal is turning overall gray & patina w/ wear & handling marks. Good shiny bore w/ lightly worn lands. (23-53/RW). CURIO. $800-1,100.
