BORTFELDT.
A superb example of a khaki canvas cloth covered pith helmet for German Seebataillon troops. The body is constructed in 6 pieces at the crown, 2 pieces at the front and rear visor, 1 piece at each side, a surrounding band and a top vent. Original brass crowned eagle and anchor front plate with national kokard below. Brown leather sweatband with green interior lining. The vent ring is embossed “LUDWIG BORTFELDT BREMEN”. There is a small sewn label on the inside right that appears to read “Fierden”. CONDITION: helmet has excellent form with not crushes or breaks. Outside has very minor scattered stains. The inside shows notable sweat stains. PROVENANCE: From the Lifelong Collection of Glen E. Mattox. (02-18704-5/BF). $2,000-3,000.
