BAYONET. Cal. 78. NSN. Bbl. 42" rnd., is marked w/ Birmingham proofs & "IG" at breech end. Arched, rnd. bodied lockplate is line border engraved. "TOWER" is on tail & royal crown over the initials "G.R." is in front of rnd. bodied serpentine cock. Lock also features inset pan, bridled friction frizzen, & feather spring w/ flame finial. A broad arrow stamp is beside finial. Walnut stock w/ palm swell near thimble has deeply fluted comb & is brass mounted. Buttplate is marked "17th REGT No 13". Grip escutcheon is marked w/ rack number "I 48". Right side of butt is stamped "N 19" & left side of comb has carved initials "A.L.". All other furniture is of correct style, except for side plate which is of later flat type. Steel ramrod has trumpet shaped head. UNATTACHED ACCESSORIES: socket bayonet w/ 16 3/4" triangular blade is marked "6" under a crown, "DAWES" and "1". CONDITION: good "as restored". Bbl. & stock appear to have always been together. Lock is a very well fitted replacement w/ light cleaning, leaving overall pitting. Sideplate does not fit well. Otherwise, bbl. is nearly all very dark brown patina w/ some raised rusting. A new pan has been set in, frizzen & mainspring refitted. Bbl. does not appear to have been reconverted. Wood is very fine, retaining original surfaces w/ numerous bumps & knocks.
