SHOTGUN. Cal. 28 Ga. 2 3/4". S# 4004644. The delightful 11-48 was a recoil operated shotgun produced from1949 to 1968. The "F" or "Premier" was the highest grade produced. Each side of the action features 3 vignettes with pointing dogs and game birds. The scenes are surrounded by vine type foliate engraving with finely stippled backgrounds that extend to upper & lower receiver areas as well the breech ends of both bbls. The unsigned engraving is likely the work of Remington Master Engraver Robert P. Runge. The blued finish is highlighted by a gold washed trigger. Trim finger groove forearm and hard rubber capped pistol grip stock of exhibition grade American black walnut is gloss finished. Fine "F" grade hand checkering. Oval brass presentation plate toeline is engraved "To Gov. Allen Shivers From Diamond Jim Moran". Allan Shivers was governor of Texas for a 7 1/2" year period beginning in 1949. Diamond Jim Moran was a flamboyant French Quarter restaurateur & gambler with reputed ties to the New Orleans mob. Born James Brocato, he was a former boxer and bodyguard to slain Sen. Huey Long. Diamond Jim became one of the most powerful figures in the most corrupt & colorful city in America. He wore mink & diamonds everywhere and was known as "The King of New Orleans". LOP: 14" over original red ventilated Pachmayr pad. Bbl. 1: 25" vent rib with fixed full choke. White mid bead is paired with an uncommon aluminum base diamond cut glass front sight. Bbl. 2: 25 1/4" vent rib with factory (no choke marking) alloy Cutts Compensator with spreader tube installed. White Bradley type target front sight with white mid bead. Both bbls. are numbered to the gun and have original factory "F" grade engraving. UNATTACHED ACCESSORIES: leather covered luggage case with brass fittings & purple velour fitted interior is engraved on the lid & front "DIAMOND JIM MORAN". Case contains cloth bbl. covers & 2 spare Full choke Cutts tubes. One tube is steel the other aluminum. Also included are 4 typed pages of historical information about Robert Allan Shivers and Diamond Jim Moran. CONDITION: very fine retaining over 98% original blue. Original wood finish shows small wear spots & handling marks. Bright near excellent bores. PROVENANCE: From the Estate of Jon Thomas. (23-4782/DS). CURIO. $10,000-15,000.
