RIFLE. Cal. 58. NSN. Bbl. 33" w/ 7 groove rifling. Blade front sight w/ 2 leaf rear sight. Bbl. & lock are dated 1863. Lock has American Eagle over "US" followed by "REMINGTON'S / ILION N.Y.". 2 Band fastened walnut stock. Brass fittings include patch box, buttplate, triggerguard, side plate escutcheons, bbl. bands & nose cap. Left ear of stock has 1 partially visible cartouche. Left side of stock has hand scratched initials "KW". Tulip tipped ramrod. The 1863 Remington is considered to be one of the best made military arms of the Civil War era. CONDITION: bbl. & lock show evidence of cleaning w/ general light pitting & reacquiring a dark tarnish. Cleaned brass is reacquiring a tarnish. Heavily sanded & refinished stock shows dents & handling marks w/ crack between lock & trigger guard. Pitted bore w/ partially intact rifling. (01-18334/DS). ANTIQUE. $800-1,200.
