RIFLE. Cal. 30-06. S#3527159. Bbl. 24" 4-groove, marked "RA (Flaming Bomb) & 3-43. This rifle appears very similar to a rare National Match 1903A3 rifle. William Brophy reported that 140 1903A3 match rifles were assembled by Springfield Armory in 1954, using standard 1903A3 rifles. The bbls. of these rifles were standard 4-groove type. They had polished nickel steel marked bolt bodies, Springfield Armory rework stamps & Redfield Olympic rear sights. The Redfield Olympic sights however prevented loading by stripper clip when they were in the forward position, thus the 1903A3 NM program was cancelled. This rifle is equipped w/ a blade front sight & USGI hood. It has a Redfield Olympic rear sight w/ eyepiece. The bolt body was polished bright, the bolt lug is marked "S35" but there is no visible "NS" marking. The rear half of bolt is of Remington mfg. & it is parkerized. It is probable this rifle is an assembled piece but there is no sales documents to prove either way. Straight grip walnut stock w/ bottom mounted sling swivels & M1907 leather sling. Left side of butt has boxed "SA/O" rebuild stamp. UNATTACHED ACCESSORIES: scans from two books on 1903 rifles detailing the 1903A3 National Match program. CONDITION: stock set shows a few dings & light handling wear. Metal retains 95% arsenal reworked parkerized finish. Very good bright bore. PROVENANCE: From the estate collection of Thomas J. Mulligan. (23-1200/MJC). CURIO. $800-1200.
