WITH PRESENTATION PLAQUE. Cal. 50 RF. NSN. Bbl. 8 1/2" rnd. with semi-circular blade front sight. Breech end is marked with the Navy anchor. Case colored frame features a spur trigger and exposed hammer rolling block action. Left side of frame has standard Remington markings with last patent date of "APRIL 17, 1868". Right side has a "P/ F.C.W." (Frank C. Warner) inspector proof. Screw fastened forearm and 1-piece walnut grip. Left side of grip has a 1 1/2" silver presentation plate marked "R.D. Joyce/ To/ J. Boyle O'Reilly". Robert Dwyer Joyce was an Irish born poet and writer. Robert Boyle O'Reilly, was born in 1844 in County Meath, Ireland. At age 19 he enlisted in the British army. He soon became discontented with British rule of Ireland. In 1864 he joined the Irish Republican Brotherhood. In 1866 he was arrested for treason and sentenced to death. His sentence was commuted to penal servitude in Australia. After 2 years he escaped and boarded a ship bound for Boston, where he became involved in journalism. In 1870 the "The Pilot" an Irish American newspaper in Boston as a reporter. Later he became the highly respected editor of the paper, advocating for rights of workers along with Native and African Americans. He produced exceptional poetry based on his prison experiences and was recognized by leading poets including Walt Whitman. John F. Kennedy Jr. quoted him in his 1963 address to the Irish Parliament. John Boyle O'Reilly passed away in 1890, barely 46 years of age. Approx. 6500 model 1865 pistols were mfg. 1866-1870. UNATTACHED ACCESSORIES: 11 pages of printed background information pertaining to John B. O'Reilly and his life. CONDITION: bbl. retains 70% dull lightly faded blue showing muzzle wear, handling marks, and spotted corrosion. Action shows faint traces of case colors in protected areas with balance fading to a mottled gray. Wood shows substantial wear and handling marks with chipping around the lower tang and butt areas. Sound mechanics. Bore is bright retaining strong rifling. (01-27184/DS). ANTIQUE. $3,000-5,000.
