SINGLE SHOT MILITARY RIFLE. Cal. 50-70. S# 9198 visible when buttstock removed. Number matches on receiver and trigger guard tangs. This rifle was part of the large purchase by the State of New York to arm state troops. It utilizes the" Locking Action" used on the Springfield-Remington Model 1871 Army rifle. The receiver tang has Remington and patent date markings. Receiver marked with "B" on the left forward end. Barrel marked on left rear "S". Ladder rear sight with stepped base graduated to 1000 yards. Stud type front sight. Cleaning rod is present. Swivels in trigger guard bow and upper band. Walnut stock set. Buttstock is marked on both sides of grip with faint inspectors cartouches. Buttstock is marked on the left side with an illegible cartouche, "B" over "26" and "135". Buttplate is marked "12" "C" and "48"on tang. Forend has three solid bands retained by springs. CONDITION: Stock set has been cleaned leaving some markings faint. Stock has moderate wear and handling marks with some chipping in cleaning rod channel. Worn metal has been cleaned and is returning to grey leaving areas of light oxidation and pitting.
