15” HORN W/ LEAD COVERED SPOUT. 3” Wood plug. Carved “MAY 4 1777.” & “ALICK BWEAYS” phonetically Alexander Boyes, “LONDONDERRY”. Alexander Boyes (1748-1829) was born in Londonderry & though no military records can be found for him, he easily could have been in the ranks of a local unit. The horn is very folky carved along w/ text. Most interesting detail is a carved barefoot Indian holding musket & smoking pipe. Initials “AB” occur again on horn & on plug. UNATTACHED ACCESSORIES: lg. file of research material. CONDITION: tan to light brown patina text & designs, all easily same, worn at high spots on Indian’s body. PROVENANCE: Ex-Wayne McNeese collection. (02-13880/JS). $1,200-1,500.
