MUSKET. Cal. 71. NSN. The 42 1/2" barrel is stamped with unreadable cartouche on top flat of octagonal breech section. Barrel transitions to round with sixteen sides in front of rear band and short wedding ring. Barrel attaches to stock with three spring retained bands. Early style lock with deeply arched rounded plate is unmarked and features serpentine cock, inset rounded pan, unbridled friction frizzen and feather spring with large spear finial. European walnut stock has very deep handrail comb and is iron mounted. Buttplate is early type long shaped finial. Trigger guard also has shaped finials. Left side of butt is carved with the initials "BC", no other marks are present. CONDITION: good. Metal parts cleaned to fairly bright pewter gray over some light pitting. Stock is basically sound with a repaired crack at front of lock which runs up to barrel channel. Bore is pitted. Lock is good. (01-24445/MGM). ANTIQUE. $1,200-1,800.
