MUSKET, “USTATES” and “US” SURCHARGED, PATTERN 1768. Cal. 67. NSN. 57 1/2" Overall. Bbl. 42". Both bbl. & lock have US surcharges & bottom of stock has lg. “USTATES” brand. There are several other markings on the buttstock as can be seen in photos. The lock in this gun is maker marked “EDGE 1762” & must have been a replacement during the war or after as it has same federal era surcharge. This musket conforms to other pattern 1768s lacking Pratt’s improvements seen on the 1777 pattern short land pattern. This is a rare & desirable example w/ such nice markings on lock, stock & bbl. CONDITION: very good overall, parts appear original to time of use, original flint configuration, lock functions well though poorly fit at bottom edge. Stock has professional wrist repair & several sm. repairs to forestock. Barrel has dark patina w/ discernible markings as can be seen in photographs. The lock has a mottled gray patina w/ discernible markings. Lock & bbl. appear to have been stamped w/ the same about 3/8" “US” surcharge. Stock markings are all discernible as can be seen in photographs including the very bold “USTATES” brand on bottom of comb. PROVENANCE: From the Collection of John "Tim" Breth Jr. (01-17751/JS). ANTIQUE. $6,000-8,000.
