PISTOL. Cal. 45 ACP. S# GO 884. Developed by Rock Island Arsenal as only pistol ever developed & manufactured solely for issue to US Army General Officers as replacement for Colt Pocket Model pistols of 1903 & 1908. Total of 1,004 were produced beginning in 1972. Built from existing 1911A1 pistols w/ appearance similar to Colt Commanders; 4 1/4" bbl. Left side of slide marked "General Officer Model / RIA". Slide has fixed National Match rear sight & 1/8" square serrated ramped front sight by RIA. Right side of frame marked "Serial No GO 884". National Match long trigger (chrome plated at RIA) w/ over travel adj. screw. Guide rod recoil spring assembly of new RIA design used on GO pistols only. Vertically grooved mainspring housing having 6 additional horizontal grooves cut equally spaced into housing's lower half, plus lanyard loop. Front strap checkered 20 LPI. Polished blued finish; matte on top of slide & edges of frame. Serrated slide stop plus checkered spur hammer, mag. release & thumb safety. Checkered walnut grips; left grip has chromed inlaid 1 7/8" by 7/16" oval ended presentation plate marked "Phillip J. Zeller, Jr. / 537-14-2059" plus right grip has crossed cannons medallion marked "ROCK ISLAND ARSENAL". Brigadier General Phillip Joseph Zeller Jr. began his career as an Army Private. In 1952 he was given a direct commission as 2nd Lieutenant in the Army Reserves. His career included assignments in Toledo, OH & Wichita, KS as Deputy Commander of 89th U.S. Army Reserve Command. He was appointed Commander of 89th U.S. Army Reserve Command & later promoted to Brigadier General on Feb. 14, 1980. MAGS: 3 near excellent 7 rd. mags electric pencil numbered “884” (matches pistol) on right side of bodies; polished bases. UNATTACHED ACCESSORIES: steel cleaning rod (hard chrome plated at RIA) plus bore brush stapled in plastic packaging. General's black garrison dress belt w/ keepers & round brass interlocking buckle having peace wreath symbol on outer perimeter & seal of United States on center section. Black Bucheimer Deputy B-1675 holster plus black US marked double mag. pouch for 2 mags. 1 1/2" silver medallion marked "1975-1985 / 5 / BRIGADE / SCOUT'S OUT" centered around crossed swords w/ mounted soldier on reverse side. CONDITION: very good to excellent original blue w/ light edge & function wear. Sm. faint scratches plus light marks on sides of slide & frame. Grips are very good to excellent w/ some slight diamond wear. Near excellent bore. (22-5674/NW). MODERN. $5,000-8,000.
