This nice example of needlework wrought with silk thread on linen featuring a cartouche embroidered with the following: "Ruth Rustell Aug 2 / in her 10 year 1816 / work at Mrs Chapman / Lee Kent". The top panel has a line of trees centering a floral filled urn above a panel wrought with a pair of angels with horns above a pair of floral filled urns centering Adam & Eve beneath a fruit tree above four lines of verse "Think of your heavenly fathers love to you / And imitate his love in all you do / Mercy shall then your early steps attend / And from the snares of death your paths defend". Over the lower panel of a manor house flanked by trees, songbirds and two seated figures all within a zigzag floral border. Housed in a late 19th century oak frame with gilt slip under glass. SIZE: Sampler is 22" x 13 1/2". Overall is 24 3/4" x 16 1/2". CONDITION: good to very good. (05-431/TG). $1,500-2,000.
