BOX. Cal. 357 Magnum. S# 57050. Bbl. 4" with gold Call bead front sight plus frame contoured adjustable rear sight having square notched blade. Shipped October 27, 1938 to Goshorn Hardware Co. of Charleston, WV. Sighted at 25 yards with 357 ammo using dead center hold. References state 584 Registered Magnums made with this barrel length which was popular with law enforcement. Matching numbered walnut service grips with diamond center and large silver medallions; made without locating disks. Factory fitted with rare S&W marked grip adapter that was also popular with law enforcement and was the forerunner for the numerous aftermarket grip adapters that followed. Made with standard width serrated trigger and finely checkered hammer having fine concentric grooves on sides; both case colored. Registration number is 4211. Matching serial numbers on frame, barrel, cylinder and extractor. Grip straps have the early 6 groove pattern. Per a Roy Jinks (S&W Historian) published article, 6,647 Registered Magnums were made 1935 to 1940 plus 4 in 1941 and 1 in 1942; 965 in 1938. Exceptional example with great options. UNATTACHED ACCESSORIES: wonderful original violet colored 2 piece box that still retains its white sticker on the bottom showing serial and registration numbers (both very readable). Box is of the length to hold a revolver with the 8 3/4" barrel as the company originally envisioned that would be its only barrel length. Inside the box is brown tissue paper, "CAUTION" statement in 3 languages, "12-1-38" Ed Lauda signed 5 shot target and tri folded 8 page instruction sheet. Unbelievable group of original paperwork with only the registration certificate missing. Factory 2017 letter confirming previous statements along with standard history information for the model. CONDITION: very minimal finish loss on top of the front sight, faintest small amount of thinning on each side of the barrel at muzzle and slight cylinder turn line. Balance of finish is a great factory quality restoration with near excellent timing, bore and grips. PROVENANCE: From the Estate of Jon Thomas, Gunsport, LTD.; formerly of the Chad Gripp collection. (25-1114/NW). CURIO. $10,000-15,000.
