Cal. 38-44 S&W. S# 2781. Bbl. 6 1/2" ribbed w/ 1871 last patent date; 2 line address. Blued target sights; bead on blade front plus adjustable rear on latch. Mfg. 1887-1910 w/in S# 1-4333; all frames mfg. pre 1898. No cal. marking on revolver; used target cartridge of 1.475" overall length having bullet seated at or below case mouth (dimensionally accepts shorter 38 S&W cartridge). Mixture of early, late and special features. Ejector is of finger style in short housing. All matching numbers; bbl. latch, bbl., cyl. (1 7/16"), extractor, frame & checkered logo hard rubber grips; front blades also numbered but not removed to verify (precise polished fit appears original). Factory cut for shoulder stock eliminating "78" from frame butt S#. No lanyard loop; plug screw instead. Most targets mfg. in 32-44 (2,930 of 4,333); only 1,413 in 38-44. Nickel plated w/ case colored hammer, trigger and trigger guard. Sideplate on left; no S&W logo on either side. Special example in unusual cal. & configuration. CONDITION: good to very good original finish w/ thinning on sides of muzzle. Scattered peppery oxidation showing mainly on right side of frame. Occasional light impact marks. Faded case colors appearing gray. Near excellent functioning and timing. Good to very good brown toned grips w/ hand wear. Good to very good bright bore w/ scattered areas of light cleaned pitting.
