Cal. 44 Mag. S# S284505. Bbl. 6 1/2" with Baughman front sight having red insert plus frame mounted Micrometer rear having white outline. Mfg. 1969 (1958-1999); last year before "N" prefix was used due to provisions of the 1968 Gun Control Act. Shipped August 20, 1969 to Baker Chadsey Co. of Johnston, RI (bankrupt in 1983) with blued finish and class B engraving plus its standard mahogany presentation case with tools. Standard checkered target hammer and grooved target trigger; both case colored. Grips are Goncalo Alves Target grips with thumb recess and without diamond center around grip screw. Original revolver cost (plus excise tax) was $384.07 including $246.25 for the engraving; converted to today's dollar the amounts are $3,334 and $2,136 (revolver only listed as $165 in 1969 Gun Digest). Stamped Model 29 designation began 1957. In 1962 the -1 indicated a change in the ejector rod to left hand thread; avoiding loosening upon firing. In 1962 the cylinder stop screw in front of the trigger guard was eliminated; 4 screw to 3 screw designation. In 1968 the diamond around the grip screw was eliminated. In 1979 the 6-1/2" barrel was dropped and replaced with a 6" barrel. With the 29-3 the pinned barrel and recessed cylinder feature (coveted by S&W enthusiasts) was eliminated. The last "dash" model was 29-7 in 1998. Special editions after 1999 (from the S&W Performance Center or in the Classic Series) have continued to 29-10. This is the variation made famous by Clint Eastwood in the Dirty Harry movie of 1971. Clearly one of S&W's most iconic revolvers. UNATTACHED ACCESSORIES: 2023 factory letter supporting the information listed along with additional Model 29 history. CONDITION: very slight cylinder turn line. Near excellent finish, grips, bore and mechanical functioning. (25-1150/NW). CURIO. $2,500-3,500.
