Cal. 44 S&W American. S# 2437. Bbl. 8" w/ pinned blade front sight & notch in bbl. latch at rear. Mfg. 1870-1872 (S#1-8000) as standard blued first model; after S# 1500 eliminating extractor vent hole on bbl. & before transitional model (S#6700-8000). Matching numbered smooth walnut grips (stamped on back of right). Bottom right rear of grip frame under grip stamped "D7"; also on cyl., bbl. latch & bbl. Other early period features include: 1.45" cyl., pinned sight blade, gear driven ejector, address w/ patent dates, square butt frame w/out knuckle, w/out hammer to bbl. interface latch & flat bottom cyl. frame. Backstrap near top stamped "MOPV". CONDITION: good appearance of old refinish to include hammer yet trigger appears original w/ no case colors. Front sight blade slightly loose w/ bottom half very slightly thicker than top half having demarcation line on left side. Just behind screw on top strap that holds cyl. retainer bar are 2 non factory drilled & tapped holes w/ plug screws that may have held some special sighting system. Bbl. markings very clear. Grips refinished w/ extra varnish & leaving most perimeter areas w/ frame proud of grips; slight crack on back of left through bushing. Very slight looseness in latch. Square shaft of extractor has brazing repair near star. Fair to good bore w/ cleaned light pitting throughout. (01-21755/NW). ANTIQUE. $2,000-3,000.
