Cal. 45 rifled bore. NSN. Bbl. 43 1/2" full oct. Bbl. signed on top flat "S.B.". Overall length 59". An attractive Samuel Baum rifle w/ a plain dark finish stock. An elaborate 4 piece engraved brass patch box w/ 9 piercings. Rifle has a 7 1/2" long fancy brass comb inlay, along w/ 5 1/4" brass toeplate & 5 silver wrist inlays. 2 Piece brass sideplate has 3 piercings. Stock is incised carved to rear of the cheekpiece. 5 1/4" Long brass saddle plate. Lock has been converted from percussion to flint. Samuel Baum Sr. was one of the earliest important gunsmiths who worked in central Pennsylvania. He had a shop in New Berlin & another near Danville in what is today Montour County. Many upper Susquehanna gunsmiths had their training in Baum’s shops. CONDITION: sm. 1 1/8" brass piece is missing from top leaf of patchbox. Patchbox door latch needs to be adj. as it does not open. Some wood missing along bbl. above the front of lock. Rifle was originally flint but the original lock was replaced w/ a percussion lock converted to flint. Dbl. set triggers appear replaced, mechanics need attention w/ dirty well discerned rifled bore. PROVENANCE: Collection of Dr. John Persing. (01-19534/RG). ANTIQUE. $2,500-3,500.
