Cal. about 42. NSN. Bbl. 39 3/4" octagon measuring 13/16" across flats at muzzle. Top flat engraved “S Baum East Buffalo PA”. Brass blade front sight w/ fixed V notch rear sight. Unmarked trade lock. Plain trigger. Trim pin fastened full length curly maple cheekpiece stock. Incise carving is found around toeline, lock, sideplate & top tang. Left side has German silver plain non engraved rectangular lid pierced & segmented patchbox. Brass fittings include crescent buttplate, toeplate, finger curl trigger guard & sideplate. German silver ornamentation includes eagle, banner & eight point star in cheekpiece area w/ two half moons & shield around wrist. Forearm ornamentation includes fancy forearm plate bordered by tear drops w/ hearts forward of lock area, three sets of old man in the moon form the pin escutcheons w/ 2 sets of tear drops between them. Additional silver forearm fittings include faceted thimble, 2 faceted pipes & nose cap. Brass tipped hardwood ramrod. American Gunsmiths by Frank Sellers gives the name Samuel Baum in three different listings for Pennsylvanian makers of original Kentucky rifles. WEIGHT: 7 lbs. 2.6 oz. CONDITION: bbl. & lock have a dark brown appearance w/ surface corrosion on lock. Brass & German silver have an applied patina. Stock has a very good intentionally aged finish. Sound lock.
