Overall length: 43". Blade length: 36". A classic example of a Civil War period Sauerbier Cavalry officer’s saber. Blade is etched over 2/3 of its length w/ various military, patriotic & foliate motifs. Gilded brass hilt w/ acanthus leaves on the upper & lower side of the 2 branches. There are oak leaves & acorns on the front of the slightly downturned handguard. The knuckle bow has swirled decoration where it meets the pommel. The pommel is bordered by vines w/ oak leaves & acorns. Wire wrapped sharkskin grip. Scabbard has gilded brass mounts that are adorned w/ foliate motifs. The throat has engraved oak leaves. The scabbard suspension loops are covered w/ acanthus leaves. The front of the drag is engraved w/ oak leaves & acorns. The body of the scabbard has a steel gray finish. An excellent quality & visually appealing saber. CONDITION: blade has a light gray patina. The hilt retains about 40% original gilding w/ the brass having a beautiful mellow patina. Sharkskin is undamaged & wire wrap is complete. Scabbard mounts retain much of their original gilding. The scabbard body has a few darkened areas from light oxidation & is free from dents or damage. The middle suspension ring is missing its screw. (02-15037/BF). $3,000-4,000.
