GERMAN GEW 98 BOLT ACTION MILITARY RIFLE WITH POST WAR REBUILD WITH ZN AND EWB MARKINGS. Cal. 8mm Mauser. S# 2189. Matching numbers on receiver & bbl. Bbl. 29 1/4". CAI. import mark on right side of bbl. Research both published & internet sourced indicates the rifle was likely assembled originally in the ordnance shops at the former Imperial training ground at Zeithain. Receiver ring is marked on top “Zn”. These rifles were made using spare unassembled receivers, this example being marked additionally w/ Imperial crown SPANDAU 1917/26, the 26 being the year of assembly. These arms were supplied to the “Black Reichswehr” which was an unofficial reserve for the regular Reichswehr. These rifles are typical of those later supplied as military assistance to Spain during the Spanish Civil War. The receiver ring is additionally marked on the right side w/ the crown L & 2 “droop wing 6” Weimar acceptance marks & marked on the left side of bbl. & receiver ring w/ “droop wing 6” Weimar proofs. Left receiver rail is marked Gew. 98. The buttstock used is marked on the right side of the butt w/ EWB & plus B. The EWB stands for the Einwoherwehr Bayern, the armed resident’s militia, which should not be confused w/ the Freikorps. The hardwood buttstock has additional faint Imperial AMBERG arsenal markings on right side of butt & at belly. Stock has recess under bolt handle & grasping grooves. Steel takedown disc & flat type buttplate. The bolt assembly is from a WW2 Model 98K rifle & is marked under bolt handle w/ 2 straight wing eagle 77s. Bolt assembly parts are serial numbered 7767f. Rear sight tangent & leaf marked S/42G. Inverted V front sight. H type upper band w/ parade hook, cleaning rod & bayonet bar are present. Narrow lower band w/ bottom swivel. QD swivel is present at butt. UNATTACHED ACCESSORIES: 14 1/2" fullered blade Model 1898/05 bayonet dated 1920 on the right side of the crossguard. Bayonet is also marked on left ricasso “F.KOELLER&COHLIGS SOLINGEN”. Back of blade is marked w/ crown, W & 17. Unmarked steel scabbard w/ ball finial. Bayonet has traces of original blue finish w/ thinning & wear. Flash guard is present. Scabbard has traces of blue turning gray & patina w/ oxidation, light pitting & dents throughout. CONDITION: rifle shows wear, dents, staining & scratches commensurate w/ long hard service. EWB marking is prominent. Forend has notably loss of wood between bands w/ several deep gouges near the lower band. Metal has 50% original blue w/ thinning, wear & scratches. Floorplate, buttplate & upper band have turned gray. Worn bore w/ light oxidation turning dark in grooves. (23-54/RW). CURIO. $800-1,100.
