TO MODEL 1896 BOLT ACTION MILITARY RIFLE. Cal. 30-40 Krag. S# 5475. Bbl. 30". This rifle was originally produced as a Model 1892 & updated later to Model 1896 specifications. The receiver is marked on the left side "U.S. SPRINGFIELD ARMORY", "1894" & S#. 1896 Rear sight graduated to 1800 yards w/ binding screw. Blade front sight. Bolt rib has lightening cut; extractor w/ hold open pin & unmarked safety. Early type open top upper band. Walnut stock set. Stock has boxed inspection mark, "JSA 1897". Smooth trap buttplate w/ curved toe. 2 circle "P" script proofs under grip; one of which is obscured by early rework finish. Ramrod channel has been correctly filled at arsenal. Correct leather sling marked "ROCK ISLAND", "1903" & "H.E.K.". CONDITION: stock has attractive early arsenal rework finish w/ slight loss of wood in inletted areas but retaining legible markings. Stock set has very light wear & scattered handling marks. Notable dent underneath mag. cover. Metal retains 60% original blue w/ thinning light wear, fine scratches & scattered spots of oxidation. Receiver & sideplate have notable mottled coloration. Good shiny bore w/ slightly worn lands. PROVENANCE: From the Lifelong Collection of Glen E. Mattox. (01-22500/RW). ANTIQUE. $1,200-1,500.
