SOUTHERN ASSOCIATION. Cal. 54 bore (44cal). S# 766. Kerr revolvers were the most common Confederate revolver used during the war other than Colts obtained prior to hostilities and those captured. About 9000 large bore Kerr revolvers were imported through the blockade, these revolvers are found in serial range approximately 1000-10000. Most have JS/anchor inspection marking stamped in grips, though many do not. The JS/anchor revolvers are less refined than the earlier first models, serial range 1 to about 1000. These first models are almost always found in smaller 80 bore (36cal), S# 766 is an exception found in same caliber as JS/anchor examples. One early identified JS/anchor S#1046 belonged to Jefferson Davis & identical early configuration. This revolver was for many years in the Factors Row Museum in Savannah GA with Confederate association which is lost. There is another big bore first model S# 798 that descended in the family of a South Carolina Confederate soldier from Charleston, this makes 2 big bore first model Kerrs that should have been in the South at the beginning of the Civil War, probably bought commercially. Like most 1st models, revolver is single action, slotted top strap, lightly border engraved frame, lock, & hammer, "LONDON ARMOURY / BERMONDSEY" engraved on lock, fine varnished checked grips and lanyard ring in butt, small vacant oval plaque on back of grips. CONDITION: very good overall, retaining 20% original blue finish, balance gray/brown patina, grips retain most of their factory varnish, mechanically fine, crisp rifled bore. PROVENANCE: Factors Row Museum (Col. Lindsey Henderson), Savannah, GA; Richard Ferry, Maclenny, FL. (01-25858/JS). ANTIQUE. $3,000-4,000.
