HAMMER BREECH LOADING SADDLE RING CARBINE.
Cal. 50 RF. NSN. Bbl. 20". These carbines were part of 1864 US contract but the 1st delivery was not made till February 1865 in .46 caliber & this .50 caliber not till September 1865. Few were used during the Civil War or occupation forces, most were sold back to Remington in 1870 at a loss & Remington promptly sold to France for use in the Franco-Prussian war, marked on rear tang: “REMINGTON’S ILION, N.Y. / PAT. DEC. 23, 1863, MAY 3 & Nov. 16, 1864”, though they were actually mfg. by Savage Revolving Arms Company of Middletown Connecticut under contract to Remington. CONDITION: good to very good overall, complete & original, gray/brown iron patina, mechanically fine, good rifled bore w/ pitting. (01-19453/JS). ANTIQUE. $800-1,200.
