MISSISSIPPI RIFLE. Cal. 54. NSN. Tryon contract 1841 "Mississippi" rifles seemed to mostly end up in southern armories after the Mexican War and this interesting rifle has 1846 dated lock and an 1844 dated barrel with front band cut so bayonet lug could be added. Bayonet lug "whistles dixie" with solder filled gaps. Standard configuration otherwise with brass furniture, most with inspection initials. Inside toolbox lid a soldier has nicely scratched his initials. CONDITION: good to very good overall, iron patina obscuring some lock markings, added chained nipple protector, several large dings and dents in stock, reproduction ramrod, good mechanics and dark rifled bore. (01-26901/JS). ANTIQUE. $2,000-3,000.
