WWII ERA TRENCH PUMP SHOTGUN. Cal. 12 ga. 2 3/4". S# 1035488. Bbl. 20" cyl. bore. As stated in "COMBAT SHOTGUNS" by Bruce Canfield on page 127 "Since the Model 12 trench gun saw much wider postwar military use than the Model 97, a larger percentage of these former weapons were overhauled as compared to the latter". This example is complete and in its original configuration with correct unpolished, "rough" gray/green parkerized finish. Right side of receiver at front and below ejection port exhibits the "thumb print" found on original examples. Small blued parts include trigger, slide bar and screws. Canfield's book indicates that Parkerized guns do not typically appear until approx. S# 1,030,000 with the highest reported number being 1,035,508, a mere 20 numbers beyond this example. 4 row type "W" handguard / bayonet lug adapter protrudes approx 7/16" beyond muzzle. Breech end of bbl. is marked w/ "flaming bomb" ordnance mark. Right side of receiver is marked "U.S." followed by the "flaming bomb" ordnance mark. Small round groove forearm & pistol grip walnut stock w/ original buttplate. Military style leather sling on original swivels. Left side of stock has "G.H.D." inspection mark over "crossed cannon" ordnance mark. Toeline of stock has stamped rack number "12" with white highlighter. Winchester & War Department records show one contract from April 1st 1942 to March 21st, 1944, saw delivery of 61,014 Model 12s, most of which were trench guns. UNATTACHED ACCESSORIES: Remington model 1917 bayonet housed in green leather scabbard. Left side of bayonet marked "1917" over "Remington" in circle. Right side of bayonet marked with eagle head over "18", flaming bomb & "U.S.". Bayonet & scabbard in very good plus condition. CONDITION: parkerized metal parts retain 85% original thinning parkerization with light high point wear and scattered light handling marks. Slide bar shows normal friction wear with approx 80% original blue remaining Stocks show light / moderate finish wear with numerous small dents, scratches & marks. Sound mechanics. Bore is generally bright showing small spots w/ dull appearance. A very fine example of a late production parkerized M12 suitable for any serious military shotgun collector! (25-1657/BH). CURIO. $5,000-8,000.
