CONTRACT SEMI-AUTOMATIC PISTOL. Cal 9mm Para. S# H1770. Bbl. 5". One of only an estimated 1,000 HP (Swedish designation: M/39) pistols mfg. by Walther in 1939 and delivered in 1940 under contract for the Swedish military. Listed by S# on page 123 of "The P.38 Pistol" by Alexander Krutzek, this example is marked with the Walther banner logo, followed by "Waffenfabrik Walther, Zella-Mehlis (Thur)/ Walther's Patent Cal. 9 m/m" and the model designation "Mod. HP" on the left side of the slide. Right side of the frame is marked with the S# "H1770", followed by a Crown/N commercial nitro proof, which is also present on the right side of the slide and bbl. block. Metal components exhibit a lustrous, high-polish blue finish overall. Frame is mounted with 2-piece WWII production grooved black pressed resin grips. Blade front sight, with U-notch rear sight. Checkered takedown lever with external extractor and rectangular firing pin. Matching numbers are present on the frame, slide (interior), bbl., and locking block. Mag. is a post-war "11/64" dated replacement. MAGS: one 8-rd. CONDITION: excellent, with metal components retaining bountiful amounts of their original Walther factory high polish blue finish, exhibiting some light to mild edge wear, some small scattered spots of light wear, as well as scattered superficial handling marks overall. Very bright bore, exhibiting what appears to be grease or light to mild surface oxidation in the grooves, while retaining well-defined rifling throughout. Grips exhibit some superficial marks from handling and storage but otherwise remain sturdy and serviceable. An extremely attractive and seldom encountered Walther HP variation that accentuates some of Walther's highest degrees of fit and finish. (24-4103/MLW). CURIO. $2,000-3,000.
