ACTION RIFLE. Cal. 8x57 (8mm Mauser). S# 942l. Bbl. 23 1/2". Blade front sight with hood. Tangent rear sight graduated to 2000m. Cleaning rod is mismatched but other visible parts are matching with buttplate & stock being lined out matching, no doubt period renumbered. Trigger guard has assembly number "4" & rear sight base assembly number "3". 1940 dated & 660 coded Steyr K98k rifle that was later reworked at German depot with added sight hood & some period renumbered parts. Depot reworked blue finish. Laminated stock set with left side sling provisions & original leather sling. Right side of butt has faint eagle "26" inspection stamps & 8-pointed star which is believed to be a rework depot stamp per volume 2B of Karem & Steve's K98k series. CONDITION: laminated stock set has an honest appearance with a deep gouge on left side of action likely from battle damage, a few smaller gouges, some band removal wear, worn finish, dings & handling marks. Metal shows a depot applied finish that is fading to gray overall with some pitting, oxidation, edge wear & minor dings. Action functions properly when hand cycled. Bore shows scattered frosting & light pitting but good rifling. (25-5082/MJC). CURIO. $2000-3000.
